Have you noticed unpleasant odors wafting about your property? The truth is that any of these signs can be potential future warning flags of severe septic tank system failure. A typical septic tank system comprises four primary components: the septic tank, pipes leading from your home to the tank, a drain field, and the soil itself.

Septic Tank Components

In this closed septic plumbing system, the water leaves your house via the pipes to the submerged septic tank, which holds the wastewater long enough to allow solids to settle out, forming a sludge that will enable oil and grease to float to the surface. While in the tank, the solid materials are partially decomposed and held in compartments that keep the sludge from moving to the drainage fields. Once the wastewater discharges into the drain field, additional treatment begins. This partially treated wastewater is pushed further into the drainage fields, where most of it is designed to evaporate away while the remainder is absorbed into the soil. Failure can occur at any point in the system, and it takes a trained specialist to locate the problem and make the necessary septic tank repairs. These parts are designed to slow down wastewater inflow and outflow, giving bacteria the time it needs to begin breaking down the waste. When these parts break, the entire system works less efficiently, which shows up in your poorly performing plumbing. Lack of Maintenance—If allowed to build up, solid waste will build to the point where it is forced out of the tank and into the drain field. Once in the area, the debris clogs the gravel and soil, which then causes wastewater to back up or erupt from the ground.

I called late last night about having no well water and our boiler not coming on. They called me back first thing this morning to say they were on their way. I told her I didn’t think they could get up our drive after the blizzard. She called her technician back to have him wait at the bottom of the driveway. We determined he could make it up with his vehicle, so he followed me to the house. Javier checked out our pressure valve for the well and found it defective. He replaced valve and got water restored. We found the boiler issue was related to the lack of water and were able to get the boiler back online. Very pleased with Javier’s help and knowledge.
